FACULTY/STAFF - Bob Johnson
Bob Johnson has spent the majority of his life at Davis High Senior High School, first as a student, graduating in 1963, then as a teacher and coach from 1971 to 2006. As a young student, he remembers helping his Algebra teacher, Joanne Moldenhauer, move one summer. Carrying box after box of books up and down stairs, he told her he was never going to be a teacher, they had too many books. Joanne reminded him of that when they were colleagues together at DHS. He also spent many summers working at Davis Sport Shop, which was owned by his mentor and former coach, Royal Morrison. Their 1962 basketball team won the Superior California Athletic League Championship that year.
After graduation from Sacramento State, Bob served two years in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam war. Returning to Davis, Bob went back to Sacramento State for his teaching credential and Master’s degree in Kinesiology. He was hired at DHS to teach an English class along with Driver’s Education and Physical Education. He feels fortunate to have taught with some of his favorite mentors and former teachers along with DHS classmates and friends, Ralph Villanueva and Dave Whitmire. Along with Dave, who was the driving force behind developing an outstanding weight training program at DHS, they could be found many afternoons loading their trucks with second hand and donated area gym equipment to furnish their newly organized weight room. Their intention was to safeguard all the athletes at DHS with a weight program appropriate for their sport. As Physical Education instructors, the weight program encouraged students and athletes to be fit and healthy for life. Their weight program was observed by many area schools looking to develop their own programs. At DHS, Bob was known for being available to help students during his free time, lunch hour or after school and always willing to write letters of recommendation. Bob coached football, wrestling and track during his thirty-five year tenure at DHS. Together with Dave Whitmire and Ralph Villanueva, they lead their teams to five league championships, ten playoff seasons and the only football section championship in DHS history. Bob and Karen have been married for fifty-two years and have one son, Brandon, who graduated from DHS in 1990. After retiring in 2006, Bob and Karen have enjoyed their traveling adventures, golfing and volunteering in the community and at Davis Community Church. He can be found in the press box every Friday home football game running the game clock. Bob has taught First Aid/CPR/AED for over thirty-five years and continues to teach the district coaching staff several times a year. He was instrumental in incorporating CPR in health classes and was recognized for his efforts by the district. Bob often guest teaches in the district for his former students, who are now PE teachers, so he can keep in contact with today’s students. His influence continues into retirement with his involvement with students and the high school and community he cares for.
